The functional scope of PROFINET meets all requirements of industrial automation. The PROFINET concept is modular, enabling users to select their own required functionality.
Independent if you are a system operator, a system/machinery manufacturer or an automation device manufacturer, there will be a lot of advantages for you while deciding for PROFINET:
- Open communication from company management level to the field level (vertical and horizontal integration)
- Investment protection by seamless integration of existing fieldbus systems
- Simple and vendor independent plant wide engineering
- Extended range of applications: Remote Access, Safety Applications, Wireless Communication,...

ETHERNET has become established as the communication medium for transferring diagnostic data. Modern IT technology, such as e-mail and HTML, is an ideal tool for connecting the Office world to the automation product environment.
PROFINET is the innovative standard for implementing integrated automation solutions based on Industrial Ethernet. PROFINET IO is the second PROFINET function class after PROFINET CBA.
Whereas PROFINET-CBA supports component based automation, PROFINET IO supports the classical fieldbus communication using fast Ethernet technology as physical transmission medium.
Profinet supports real-time capable process communication as well as open communication via Ethernet TCP/IP. This means PROFINET distinguishes between three performance classes:
- TCP/IP
Open Ethernet TCP/IP communication without real-time requirements (e.g. Web technology with cycle times up to 100 ms) - RT (Real-Time)
IO data exchange between programmable controllers with Real-Time quality (1 - 10 ms) - IRT (Isochronous Real-Time)
Isochronous real-time communication for synchronized IO data exchange (cycle time <1ms)
PROFINET IO allows for integrating simple decentralized field devices or high-performance motion control applications into the communication. The latter require a time-synchronized setpoint specification within minimum cycle time.
| PROFINET users benefit from the following advantages | ![]() |

- Investment for already installed fieldbuses is protected as the new functions and technologies can be installed additionally.
- Integrated communication between ETHERNET and subordinate fieldbuses.
- Use of standardized technologies of the information technology to ensure simple and compatible connection to the office world.
- Real-time capability with IRT to enable the transfer of time-critical process data and time-uncritical diagnostic data using one medium and one installation.
- Using the PC software known from the IT world, such as Internet browser or Office software for easy automation component diagnostics and information on process data and system states.
- Safety on PROFINET with PROFIsafe V2
With PROFIsafe V2, PROFINET offers a solution in the area of safety oriented communication that allows for integrating safety oriented components into the existing network. A second 'safety fieldbus' is not necessary. This means a potential for significant cost savings. PROFIsafe V2 is certified according to EN954, AK6 or SIL3. - Wide spectrum of field devices
A wide spectrum of field devices for PROFINET IO can be expected in the future as the PROFINET technology is driven by the PROFIBUS user organization (PNO). Already today many groups of experts in the PNO are working on implementing the profiles to PROFINET IO.
